The Governor’s Committee on Scholastic Achievement is a non-profit organization that establishes meaningful relationships between high school students from New York City and volunteer mentors from the business community. In partnership with some of the largest and leading companies in the metropolitan area (e.g., Google, Spotify, Deutsche Bank), the GCSA mentoring program’s mission is to empower youth with a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the “world of work,” develop relationships with mentors who can serve as role models and provide innovative guidance to students as they develop their goals and focus on their post-secondary future. GCSA provides a weekly after school touchpoint for 150 students throughout the school year. These sessions alternate between in-school academic enrichment sessions and one-to-one mentoring sessions taking place at company sites. These sessions focus on a series of topics to help students successfully complete high school and prepare themselves for post-secondary opportunities. For example, students spend time learning about resume writing, college application and financial aid processes, and career exploration. GCSA is committed to serving historically underperforming districts and communities by effectively building relationships between schools, corporate partners, and mentors that help develop students into dynamic young leaders and future entrepreneurs. Why Mentoring? Mentoring guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter. Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships have powerful positive effects on young people in a variety of personal, academic, and professional situations. Ultimately, mentoring connects a young person to personal growth and development, and social and economic opportunity. Yet one in three young people will grow up without this critical asset.
