The European Association of the Via Francigena ways EAVF is a European network responsible for enhancement of the Via Francigena - historic walking route to Rome certified by the Council of Europe in 1994. The EAVF is an umbrella organisation representing interests of more than 700 stakeholders, local authorities, regions and private partners in England, France, Switzerland and Italy along the 3200 km of the Via Francigena. The AEVF has been recognised by the Council of Europe for its work in protection, enhancement and promotion of the Via Francigena in its integrity from Canterbury to Santa Maria di Leuca. Retracing the medieval route of soldiers, commerce and pilgrims, the modern Via Francigena is a long-distance itinerary offering a walking experience along a veritable corridor of culture in rural Europe towards Rome. In 2021 to celebrate its 20th anniversary the association launches a walking initiative “Road to Rome” – a collaborative project aiming to enhance the sustainable walking tourism along the Via Francigena. The relay race will depart from Canterbury in June to arrive to Santa Maria di Leuca in October, supported by the EAVF members, private stakeholders, international organisations, local associations, media and press. The association, fostering collaboration from local the European level, has been praised by international and European organisations such as UNWTO, UNESCO, European Commission and Parliament.
