Camerata Musica Cambridge
www.cameratamusica.org.uk'Described the great Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewksi as 'the finest concert series I know', Camerata Musica Cambridge is the premier classical music concert series in the University of Cambridge and is one of the most prestigious in the country. It focuses on the chamber music, lieder and choral repertory, and regularly features performances by the world's most celebrated soloists and ensembles. Among the artists whom it has attracted in recent years are the pianists Piotr Anderszewksi, Mitsuko Uchida, Daniil Trifonov, Angela Hewitt, Igor Levit, Sir András Schiff, and Arcadi Volodos; the vocalists, Christiane Karg, Sir Thomas Allen, Christian Gerhaher and Matthias Goerne; the instrumentalists Pinchas Zukerman, Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras; and the Takács, Ébène, Artemis, Belcea, Casals, and Hagen Quartets. It has been highly effective in attracting younger audiences to classical music, and is the only concert programme in the country that regularly reserves more than half its seats for students and those under 25. Through generous sponsorship, these tickets are made available to students at generously subsidized prices. Founded in the 2006 academic year by John Adamson, Camerata Musica is based in Peterhouse, the oldest of the University of Cambridge's constituent colleges. Performances are held in Cambridge in the concert hall of Peterhouse, the West Road Concert Hall, and the Chapel of Trinity College. Camerata Musica Cambridge takes its name from the celebrated Florentine Camerata — or Camerata Fiorentina — founded in Florence in 1573 by a group of scholars and musicians to promote a revival in what was then defined as Classical music or ‘musica antica’ — the music and poetry of antiquity — with a view to bringing a new generation into contact with its riches.
