EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), The Geological Surveys of Europe, is a not-for-profit organization representing 37 National Geological Surveys and some regional Surveys in Europe, an overall workforce of several thousand experts. EuroGeoSurveys' mission is to provide public Earth science knowledge to support the EU’s competitiveness, social well-being, environmental management, and international commitments. In our day-to-day activities, we promote the contribution of geosciences to European Union affairs and action programmes, and provide a permanent network between the Geological Surveys of Europe and a common, but not unique, gateway to each of the Members and their national networks. EGS coordinates a number of Expert Groups and temporary Task Forces that integrate information, knowledge and expertise deriving from the member NGSs in fields including natural hazards, water, soils, energy, mineral resources, marine geology, spatial data, carbon capture and storage, geochemistry, Earth observation and international cooperation. These Expert Groups have contributed significantly – as has been recognised by the European Commission - to the definition of some fundamental legislative initiatives and policy provisions, such as the INSPIRE Directive; the Raw Materials Initiative; the Directive on the geological storage of CO2; the EC’s Maritime Policy; the Soil Thematic Strategy; the Water Framework Directive; the Mining Waste Directive; the Resource Efficiency Policy; the Coastal Zone Policy.
