Bloomsbury Natural Capital
www.bloomsburynatural.capitalNatural capital is the world’s stock of natural assets: rocks, ores & other minerals, soil, air, water and all living things. Bloomsbury Natural Capital (BNC) was set up to invest profitably - "profit with a purpose" - in commercial companies which also sequester carbon and boost biodiversity. Peter Hollands is Chairman, Martin Hollands is Managing Director, Barbara Sotowicz a Non-Executive Director. Special Advisors are James Griffiths (Forestry) and Simon Benney (I.T. & data). The investments made have been at Seed Capital and Series A stages. BNC has taken 3%-5% of shares in an initial investment, which might potentially be raised to 10%+ in subsequent funding rounds. Projects with pre-money values between £2.5M-£15M have been the main targets. BNC’s first investment was in 4% of the equity of Cascadia Seaweed Corp of British Columbia. BNC's Martin Hollands has been appointed Senior Advisor to their Board, on Ecosystem Services and Restorative Aquaculture. Seaweed cultivation sequesters carbon, removes excess nutrients from seawater, boosts biodiversity and reduces coastal erosion. Cascadia farms and processes seaweeds and is researching production and use of algae-derived farm biostimulants, besides researching use of cold-water seaweeds in cattle feed, to improve conversion ratios and reduce bovine methane emissions. BNC's has also made a forestry-related investment, in Xilva AG of Switzerland, which brings together finance and forestry projects. BNC took 6% of Xilva's first convertible loan financing round. BNC’s parent company, Bloomsbury Minerals Economics, has a 22% equity stake in Skarn Associates, the global leader in measuring each mine's energy use and sources, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, flood and drought risk.
