The Foundation for Education in Honduras (FEIH)
www.feih.orgFEIH is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing education to children in high-need areas of rural Honduras by building and refurbishing primary schools. The roots of the foundation took hold when Ramiro Ocasio began making trips to poor communities in his home country of Honduras to bring basic supplies, food and water to those in need. During his trips, he realized that these gifts made a big difference in the short term, but to really change Honduras in the long term he would need to attack the root problem -- education. With the help of Jon Henes, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where Ramiro worked as a mailroom clerk at the time, he was able to raise funds and completely refurbish an existing school. For the first time in the Finca Cuatro community, not one student dropped out. Jon saw this success, along with Ramiro's passion and dedication, and helped him form FEIH. FEIH completed its first project on January 16, 2016. The Santiago Morales school was a two classroom, one bathroom facility with leaks in the ceiling, no electricity, no running water and no playground. The school served 70 students in six grades and had to run morning and afternoon sessions. Together, with assistance of community parents and leaders, FEIH built a six classroom, six bathroom school with purified running water, electricity and a playground. The school now serves over 100 students in one session and employs an additional teacher. Each student was given backpacks and school supplies. While we have made some progress, there is much work to do. Honduras faces immense challenges as it has the highest murder rate in the world, more than half of the country lives in poverty and it sends more unaccompanied minors to the border of the United States than any other country in the world. Honduras cannot be changed overnight, but we believe each school FEIH builds or refurbishes will have a remarkable downstream impact on the children and the communities-at-large.
