Pickersgill Retirement Community is a nonprofit, continuing care retirement community nestled in a quiet, dogwood-lined neighborhood in Towson, Md. Founded in 1802, Pickersgill Retirement Community is named after one of its early board presidents, Mary Pickersgill, the seamstress who sewed the flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 that inspired Frances Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Pickersgill is the rare community that can claim it has proudly served Baltimore-area seniors for more than two centuries. Known for its rich traditions and comfortable accommodations, Pickersgill offers seniors a retirement lifestyle with a variety of independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care accommodations, including assisted living suites. History Pickersgill was founded more than 200 years ago by a group of female patriots only a quarter of a century after the United States was born; the retirement community is named for Mary Young Pickersgill, who—along with her mother, daughter and two nieces—sewed the flag that flew over Fort McHenry, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the British bombardment of the Baltimore fort in the War of 1812.
