We’re a team of 15 people who research and teach biometric technologies. The mission of the BSPA laboratory is to excel in the applied research of biometric technologies with a continued commitment to education and innovative research, as well as engaging academia, government and industry in all activities. We strive to achieve our mission through a partnership between industry and academia, bridging cultures to find solutions to the challenges associated with developing and implementing biometric technologies. To foster this, we undertake a number of different projects either sponsored commercially or internally. Commercial projects include work for a number of major biometric companies across a wide range of modalities. Internal projects typically relate to undergraduate or graduate projects where there is no commercial sponsor. Many of our internal projects have led to outside funding, as well as publications, presentations and on-demand seminars, and new sub-disciplines within the field. Our research blends into education, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, on-campus and on-line. At the graduate level, students in the Biometric Technologies and Applications course have worked on small research projects that have led to publications and presentations around the world. Biometrics companies are integral to our mission – over the past eight years representatives from these companies have presented guest lectures, mentored graduate and undergraduate students, and donated equipment. As we embark on our ninth year, we continue to have an active engagement agenda which builds on our achievements. We have already launched our online education program with three different tracks to suit budget, time commitment, and needs of individual students. In January 2010, we will initiate a 250 person test as part of our ongoing testing and evaluation program.
