Approximately 550,000 new businesses open up each month across the nation, with African-American women, Asian-American women, and Latina women, leading the startup trend. In fact, African-American women are the fastest growing demographic of female entrepreneurs and they are starting businesses at the rate of 6 times the national average (The Diversity of Entrepreneurs in the US- infographic, Lance Surety Bonds) There is almost an even breakdown of 25 percent among four age groups that comprise entrepreneurs today. They are ages 20-34 (25%), ages 35-44 (25.5%), ages 45-54 (25.3%), and ages 55-64 (24.3%). Over 67 percent of California community college students are people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and roughly 53 percent are female. Community college enrolled age groups are spread similarly to entrepreneur age data; seventy five percent of these students are between the ages of 20-65. (California Community Colleges Key Facts, California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office) The level of influence and impact that social networking is having on business start-up cannot be overestimated. Community Building is becoming the first step to engage real-time leads for a business by attracting a local, regional, or global community and not directly selling the business to the customers but to the community.
