Over 3 million Syrians have found temporary safe havens inside Lebanon. Of the 3 million, the fortunate half are those with prior business connections or extended families in Lebanon. The second half are trapped in camps set up by the United Nations. They cannot go forward. They cannot go home. The large international relief agencies provide nothing beyond minimal shelter, food and water. These camps are places where hope dies quickly. Walid’s Fund identified six camps in South Lebanon where the top agencies once visited but then pulled out. The region is an “aid desert.” Families and children, one half of the residents are children, have nothing to do but wait for hand-outs from the Lebanese Red Cross. The situation is ripe for exploitation. Walid’s Fund is organized to inspire hope for those living without hope. We propose a project that no one has yet attempted, to tap innate talent and skills and promote self-reliance and new enterprise within the camps. We believe in the power of the human spirit, resilient even amid great suffering.
