CREAR is a non-profit organization dedicated to supplementary, educational opportunities for the youth of Playa Sámara and El Torito. While tourism has brought a strong economic focus to Costa Rica, the consequential rise in the cost of living has contributed to higher rates of poverty. The region in which CREAR operates is one of the poorest in the country, with 39% of the local people living in poverty. The local schools suffer from lack of resources and therefore Guanacaste has a shocking 13% graduation rate from high school. Additionally, the local children only attend school for an average of 3 to 4 hours a day, proving the existing need for a program outside of school hours 210 days a year, CREAR offers English, Art and Technology classes, Girl’s Empowerment activities, In-School Assemblies, Community Workshops, among others, all to improve the holistic education of our local youth.
