THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR PLAY (NIFPlay) is a not-for-profit, social benefit organization that promotes the developmental and wellness benefits of Play based on the extensive research into play, particularly free play which is play directed by the individual. Research has shown that free play is a critical element for healthy physical, social and cognitive development in the first 8 years of life. Research has further shown that free play can reduce stress, improve creativity and afford general wellness throughout life. The NIFPlay website provides a database of peer reviewed research into play as well as profiles of many of the prominent play researchers. NIFPlay envisions and advocates for a world in which everyone understands the vital importance of free play and makes free play a part of everyday life. We help adults learn how to identify what is playful for them and in particular for the children in their care in order to develop lifelong play habits, to recognize when they have not been playing enough. We explain the science showing that play is central to learning and well-being, and we provide practical materials for parents, caretakers, and anyone who wants to build play into their life.
