Partners in Agriculture
www.partnersinag.orgWe use education and agriculture to build sustainable livelihoods for the Haitian people, and restore the island's green farmlands and forests. Our model has two main components, each made stronger by the other. First, we operate the Centre de Formation Fritz Lafontant, a two-year agricultural vocational school. Our curriculum is based on that of EARTH University in Costa Rica, and focuses on all agricultural sciences, business management, entrepreneurship, ethics, and community development. Successful graduates are awarded their Agronomist Technician certificate from the Haitian government. Second, we use the assets of our school and it's significant farmlands, including agricultural inputs, staff, and successful graduates, to partner with poor farmers in remote villages. We train them in how to productively farm with climate-smart techniques, connect with markets, and build a lifetime income. The interplay of these two program components is transformational, both for our students and for thousands of poor farmers in Haiti's Central Plateau. Partners in Agriculture was formed in the year 2000 by Gillaine Warne, alongside her friend and early Board member, Dr. Paul Farmer. Our Haitian colleagues operate under the name Zanmi Agrikol, the Haitian Creole translation of Partners in Agriculture.
