Located in Tierra Garzón - Uruguay, the Piero Atchugarry gallery was founded on September 18, 2013 with an exhibition comprised of Italian avant-gardes, showing works by Bruno Munari, Piero Dorazio, Getullio Alviani, Agostino Bonalumi and Turi Simeti. On January 5, 2014 the gallery moved to a larger space occupying a converted stable. The opening reception was a group exhibition featuring Geometric Abstraction and Optical Art with artists such as Bruno Munari, Riccardo De Marchi, Peter Weber, Francisco Sobrino and Luis Tomasello. The last exhibition opened on April 17, 2014, a Solo-show of the great Uruguayan artist José Pedro Costigliolo. The exhibition focus on the artist’s stylistic development from the late 1950s up to 1980s, highlighting determinant works such as Untitled 1966, exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Additionally, the gallery has an artist in residence program, which has been active since December 2013. Artists from all over the world are invited to regenerate and create specific artworks inspired by the calm and beauty of the Uruguayan landscape and nature. As of today the three following artists have participated in this program: Raffaele Rossi (Italy, b. 1958), Daniel Papaleo (Argentina, b. 1968) and Humberto Cazorla (Venezuela, b. 1953). The program aims to educate the public on artistic processes by converting the gallery into an artist studio. Visitors are welcome to come and explore artistic practices in situ, as well as to meet and exchange ideas with the artists. Each visiting artist will develop a body of work in Tierra Garzón and create a site-specific installation for the park surrounding the gallery, leaving a permanent memory of his or her passage.
