Marian Street Theatre for Young People
Marian Street Theatre for Young People creates quality children’s theatre and empowers young artists by providing unique creative opportunities mentored by theatre professionals. It was established in 1974, and is a Not-For-Profit and tax deductible status. We also offer drama classes for 5 - 18 years, adults and young people with an intellectual disability. Each of our plays provide roles for 15 young people to be involved in the productions, from on stage, to backstage and with the creative team – this is a professional environment lead by industry professionals. The productions perform up to 26 times to a public audience of 5,500 families with young children. We currently do two production per annum. Our productions give opportunities for young artists to be at the centre of the creative process – they audition, rehearse and perform the production, with opportunities both on stage, back stage and in the creative team, all while mentored by industry professionals. The productions additionally provide professional pathways into the theatre industry. Young people make life-long friends through being involved in the productions, and many go on to work in the arts professionally. These arts professionals will often then return to MSTYP, bringing back fresh skills and artistic perspectives which rejuvenate our practice. The intangible benefits the productions give to our young people last a lifetime. Thousands of young people have been involved in mounting Marian Street Theatre for Young People productions over 40 years and have contributed enormously to the unique identity of the North Shore and strong feeling of community in the area.
