First Generation Student Union (FGSU)* Mission Statement: (1) Foster a welcoming and safe community for first-generation students at the University of Southern California (USC). (2) Facilitate the transition to college for first-generation students by pointing them to the right resources and providing them with valuable information and connections through speaker events and workshop opportunities. (3) Provide a platform for first-generation students to collectively express their concerns regarding their first-gen college experience and support them to collaboratively advocate for better change. *For the purposes of the organization, the first-generation college student is best defined as a student whose parent(s)/ legal guardian(s) did not attend college/university or completed a bachelor’s degree in the United States. First-generation students are the first person in their family to attend a four-year college/university to attain a bachelor’s degree. Being first-generation is a very proud accomplishment and we are here to support your success. The First Generation Student Union is open to all first-generation students at any time.
