STS is a refugee led start-up moving beyond literacy and numeracy to focus on learning environments and 1st century pedagogies to transform high school and university education, schooling, and learning in East Africa. 1, LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: Our physical learning environments will sustain and promote multiple models of student learning for example individual and group work, space for presentations and exploration, promote interaction and sense of community. We will expand our notion of learning environments to encompass more than physical space allow us to provide students with opportunities regardless of whether students are tackling problems in their communities through internships and service projects, networking with peers using our social networking tools to gather and share data on global issues. PEDAGOGY Our teachers will also be learners. Teachers will themselves be co-learners and collaborators within the learning environment. We will develop a learning community with teachers engaged in productive dialogues, team work, shared learning. According to UNHCR, 76% of refugees are out of secondary education and 97% of refugees are out of university globally. The institutions enrolling the 24% high school and 3% university refugees lack alignment with new shifts in pedagogy. “if ‘space' is not changed when ‘curriculum' is changed, we will end up with a lack of alignment. Unfortunately, these educational institutions are notoriously slow when it comes to making change (Lehman and chase, 2015), even in light of the technological advances in recent years. Your support will get us one step closer to Converting classrooms to maker spaces to reduce the tension of implementing our innovative initiative in an outdated system as the “grafting-on and hope it sticks” approach to change is supplanted with a totally new approach built from the ground up to provide education solutions tailored specifically to the needs of anyone at anytime and anywhere.
