PORTSMOUTH VOLUNTEERS FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.
Our business of the heart is to provide short-term emergency sheltering during the winter months and we operate a year-round Service or Drop-In Center for individuals who are homeless. Our goal is to help inspire hope, re-build confidence and restore faith for individuals who are homeless so they can begin to see and create a pathway back to getting their lives on track. Affectionately, known as PVH, we serve as a nexus where government, business and community intersect in collaboration for a more comprehensive approach to homelessness in out city. PVH, a 501 C-3 non-profit organization, was founded in 1991 by a small group of Portsmouth residents who were concerned about the homeless individuals they saw on the streets during the cold winter months. Collectively, this group convinced four downtown churches to open their doors on the coldest nights between November and April. Today some 20+ years later, we remain steadfast in our mission to be the primary provider of emergency shelter for single homeless individuals and to move them from dependency to self-sufficiency, through supportive services in cooperation with other organizations in the Portsmouth area.
