Bridging Cultures - Elena Abbruzzese
My name is Elena Abbruzzese and I am a freelance translator and a language tutor. My working languages are Italian, English and Arabic. I have been working as a freelance translator since 2017 for different clients, different domains and text types, mainly: market research surveys, articles for fashion magazines, slam poetries for advertisement campaigns, reports for NGOs, academic papers. In my current practice, I use XTM and SDL Trados 2019 as CAT tools. As a language tutor, I am currently working as an English teacher offering private tutoring to both children and adults. SUMMING UP MY STUDIES. I completed my undergraduate studies at ‘L’Orientale’ University of Naples in ‘Linguistic and Cultural Mediation’, awarding 110/110 cum laude, focussing on English and Arabic. After my Bachelor’s, I moved to Rabat, Morocco, where I attended an intensive and immersive Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) Language Course, achieving the level of ‘Advanced 3’. Thanks to this experience, I had the opportunity to complete my postgraduate studies at ‘SOAS’ University of London, graduating in ‘MA Theory and Practice of Translation’ (Arabic/English/Arabic) with Distinction. TWO PAST WORKING EXPERIENCES. In June 2018, I held a workshop on the use of computer-aided translation (CAT) tools, SDL Trados, to lecturers in foreign languages, translation, linguistics and endangered languages at ‘SOAS’ University of London. From September 2018 to March 2019, I worked as a Senior Teaching Fellow at ‘SOAS’ University of London, lecturing and convening the Translation Technology module for postgraduate students. Particularly, I delivered frontal lessons on translation technology history and practical use of CAT tools (SDL Trados), while challenging thinking, fostering debate and developing the ability of students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
