bere:architects

bere:architects is one of the UK’s foremost Passive House practices with a strong emphasis on both design quality and R+D. Winner of numerous design and sustainability awards, we have more than 25 years of excellence, expertise and experience in the field of sustainable architecture. Founded by Justin Bere, the practice produced some of the UK’s first Passive House buildings: London’s first Passive House home, UK’s first Passive House Social Housing, UK’s first Passive House CSH level 6 home, UK’s first Passive House non-domestic retrofit, and most recently setting a new benchmark for performance with the UK’s first Passive House Plus home, proven by two years of monitoring. bere:architects also won both of the BRE Passive House housing competitions (2009, Ebbw Vale & 2012 Watford). The practice has carried out and published a substantial amount of R+D work with academic partners, some of it funded by the Technology Strategy Board (renamed Innovate), some of it peer-reviewed academic papers, and much of it self-funded, and a substantial amount of this research work is freely available on the practice’s website. The practice launched and co-organised the UK’s first two annual Passivhaus Conferences in Camden Town Hall in 2010, and Islington Town Hall in 2011 and the first annual student Passivhaus Conference at the University of East London in 2010. These were largely free and hugely successful events that helped increase the Passive House uptake amongst architects and launched the Passive House concept to the public and politicians.
