Unión Salvadoreña de Estudiantes Universitarios (USEU)
Unión Salvadoreña de Estudiantes Universitarios (USEU) roughly translates from Spanish to English into the "Salvadoran Student Union" and stands as a statewide student organization with transnational roots tracing to the Salvadoran student movement. Founded in 2005 to give visibility to the Salvadoran student population, USEU exists across multiple universities in California with the purpose of empowering the Salvadoran community by: 1) developing an interest toward higher education amongst youth, 2) developing awareness about cultural, political, and economic issues that directly affect the Salvadoran community, 3) facilitating the history and cultural traditions of El Salvador, and 4) mobilizing the Salvadoran student population to engage in local action. USEU has led delegations to El Salvador; organized summer study abroad programs with El Salvador's only public university, la Universidad de El Salvador (UES); organized public annual statewide retreats and conferences across California universities (e.g., UCLA, UCSB, CSULA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, CSUN, and UC Riverside); hosted indigenous elders, poets, professors, government officials, artists, writers, and community organizers from Central America for public community events; partnered with the General Consulate of El Salvador in Los Angeles and the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN) to support local campaigns and community projects; and connected hundreds of students at over 10 campuses.
