Mahakirau Forest Estate

Mahakirau Forest Estate is located at the crest of the Coromandel ranges on the historic 309 Road. It is an area of ‘Outstanding Wildlife Value’, ranked 15th out of 146 key ecological sites in the Waikato Region and ‘is within a TCDC defined area of outstanding landscape and has high natural character and very significant natural amenity values’. It is an important strategic site adjacent to the two IUCN rated locations of Manaia Kauri Sanctuary and the Papakai Ecological Area. For almost 20 years, Mahakirau Forest Estate owners have provided ecological protection programmes, with the support of DOC, WRC and Kiwis for Kiwi, as part of this landscape scale conservation land which is of over 10,000 ha. Mahakirau Forest has extraordinary biodiversity including over 50 tree species, as well as prolific and diverse epiphytic, understorey and stream boundary flora. Our regular surveys and inventories have identified several species of highly threatened fauna which are nationally identified conservation priorities, including: COROMANDEL STRIPED GECKO | ARCHEY’S FROG | HELMS’ BUTTERFLY | HOCHSTETTER’S FROG | NORTH ISLAND BROWN KIWI | KAKA | LONGFIN EEL| The Estate has a very diverse mix of owners who now have considerable experience planning,implementing, monitoring, adapting & evolving our conservation project. Living amongst us we not only have experts in relevant conservation fields (entomology, ornithology, landscape planning, botany, geotechnical engineering, predator control & technology), but an extraordinarily wide range of backgrounds and expertise. In 2017, Mahakirau Forest Estate was recognised by Waikato Regional Council for its 'Leadership, Innovation and Inspiration' to the wider Coromandel conservation community.
